POLK COUNTY, Minn. — A man from rural Angus, Minn., was sentenced Tuesday, February 20, to 11 1/2 years in prison on two felony drug charges.
Alfredo Torres, 72, pleaded guilty in October to first-degree sale of a controlled substance and conspiracy to commit a first-degree controlled substance crime.
Torres’ remaining two charges — first-degree possession of a controlled substance and failure to affix tax stamps — were dismissed in a plea agreement.
Polk County law enforcement began investigating methamphetamine crimes in the area in 2021, according to court documents. Torres was arrested in October 2022 after law enforcement found approximately 213 grams of methamphetamine in his home, as well as suspected stolen property and drug paraphernalia.
The defense had asked for 85 months in prison, arguing that Torrez’s involvement in the large-scale drug investigation was minimal.
“Nowhere in Mr. Torres’ criminal history can it be established that he was a major drug trafficker in the community,” the defense’s sentencing memorandum said.
The defense also argued that because of Torres’ age, “a sentence that exceeds the lower limit of the guidelines would be life in prison.”
Ultimately, Torres was sentenced to 138 months, or 11 and a half years, in prison. He has served 502 days in prison and will spend his sentence at the Minnesota Correctional Facility in St. Cloud.
