A local democracy reporter has left his position to launch his own news title in competition with his former employer.
Nathan Bryant has bid farewell to his role at Reach, which covers Northamptonshire, under plans to form the Oxfordshire Independent, funded by the BBC.
Nathan, pictured, lives in Oxfordshire and previously worked as a local government reporter for the Oxford Mail, as well as reporting regularly on the county for the BBC.
He aims to start writing regular news for the digital edition of The Independent later this month or early September.
Initially, it will be free to read, but Nathan plans to start charging for some content in October.
Mr Nathan told HTFP: “I will be focusing on local and national politics and how that impacts the people of Oxfordshire.”
“The important thing about this site is that the content is original and it’s not just a run-of-the-mill site that relies on press releases.
“I want to be able to create different types of articles, from short news articles to long feature articles.”
Nathan started his career with South Wales Argus in 2013 before moving to Wolverhampton Express & Star three years later.
He was local government reporter and then local democracy reporter for the Mail from July 2017 to October 2019, before moving to the BBC and joining Reach’s Northants Live website as an LDR in December last year.
In addition, he received a great deal of help from Sarah Ward, an ex-LDR herself who ran the independent NN Journal from her days as a local democracy reporter in Reach, Northamptonshire.
“It got me thinking about what running your own site is actually a possibility, and I’m really excited to see what I can share there.”
