A veteran political journalist is leaving the local publishing house he worked for for almost 30 years to take a senior position at an independent competitor.
Martin Shipton will move from Reach plc-owned Western Mail to become deputy editor at Nation.Cymru.
Mr Martin, pictured, has been political editor of the Cardiff-based Mail since 2020, having previously been chief reporter for 18 years.
He was previously chief reporter for the Mail’s sister publication Wales on Sunday, which he joined in 1994.
Mail Editor-in-Chief Katrin Pascoe said: “I would like to thank Mr Martin for his outstanding work, particularly as chief reporter and then political editor of the Sunday Wales and Western Mail newspapers.
“Throughout those 29 years, he has been steadfast in producing journalism that matters to Wales, pursuing his stories with a tireless commitment to scrutinizing journalism and holding those in power to account. We wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors.”
Mr Martin said: “It has been a great privilege to work with Sunday Wales and the Western Mail for such an extended period of time and I have enjoyed working with such talented colleagues.
“I believe that quality journalism is desperately needed in every democracy, and that the primary responsibility of news organizations is to keep readers informed about how decisions made by those in power affect their lives. I strongly believe that this is the case.”
In an interview with his new employer, he added: “I’m excited to be joining Nation.Cymru, which has quickly established itself as a Welsh news organization that delivers high-quality content and treats its readers with respect.
“We love the fact that its only loyalty is to the people of Wales and we look forward to supporting its further growth.”
Nation.Cymru was launched in 2017 and describes itself as ‘the national news service in English for Wales’.
Chief Executive Officer Mark Mansfield said: He is widely regarded as the best political journalist in Wales and securing his services is a huge coup for us.
“He brings a huge amount of experience and knowledge to the team and his work will be an invaluable addition to our coverage of Welsh politics and current affairs. I can’t wait.”
