An editor fired from his job after 30 years in journalism has started his own media company.
Matt Reeder announced this move after retiring after 22 years with National World and its pioneers.
Matt (pictured) edited Harrogate Advertising for 18 months. before becoming the head of the audience He is in charge of National World’s North Yorkshire Weekly, which underwent a group-wide reorganization last year.
In that role, which is now redundant, he was responsible for all digital content for the company’s titles in Harrogate, Scarborough and on the Yorkshire coast.
Matt’s resignation comes as part of a series of layoffs that have affected more than 50 journalists, and now Matt has announced his new venture in a post on X.
He aims to provide services such as press releases, copywriting, sub-editing, editorial advice, and crisis PR.
Matt wrote“So, I’m ready to write a new chapter. After 22 years at Johnston Press/JPIMedia/National World, I went freelance and started Matt Reeder Media to make money from redundancies. I’m trying to get back on my feet.
“Scary? Oh yeah. Exciting? Surely. Let’s do this.”
Matt trained at Highbury College, Portsmouth, and began working as a trainee journalist at the Northavon Gazette in Bristol in 1993.
He then worked for the Derby Telegraph from 1996 to 1998 before moving into sports at the Swindon Advertiser, where he covered Swindon Town FC and became sports editor.
Matt joined JP in 2001 and became chief football writer for the Yorkshire Post and Yorkshire Evening Post, before covering the sports desk for 12 years from 2004 to 2016.
He became head of digital at the Leeds-based sister daily in 2016, before moving to Harrogate two years later. There he served as Content Editor and Deputy Editor-in-Chief at Advertiser, becoming Editor-in-Chief in March 2021.
