Crime is escalating across California’s cities and communities, taking a toll on the state’s residents and businesses. Because of Prop. 47, there is no accountability for these crimes, thefts are underreported, and some stores are even instructed not to report theft crimes.
A ballot initiative to amend Proposition 47 is currently collecting signatures for the November 2024 ballot. We hear that 400,000 California voters have already signed a petition to put this measure on the ballot.
Proposition 47, passed by tragically misinformed voters in 2014 and bluntly titled the “Safe Neighborhoods and Schools Act” by then-Attorney General Kamala Harris, was designed to tackle drug crimes, drug crimes, It reduced many felonies to misdemeanors, including date rape and theft of any kind. Even for a repeat offender who steals every day, the amount is less than $950.
Proposition 47 also decriminalizes drug possession from a felony to a misdemeanor, removes law enforcement’s ability to make arrests in most situations, and gives judges the ability to order drug rehabilitation programs rather than incarceration. Deleted.
