The current predicament is, to some extent, an inevitable result of CNN’s insistence on access to journalism. The decision to hire Chris Cuomo was not itself wrong or unethical, although nepotism certainly played a role. But instead of acknowledging his family connections in the proper way, the network exploited and promoted them. This cannot continue to be the norm for reporters and anchors.
To say that Chris Cuomo’s actions lacked journalistic integrity would be an understatement. Being an objective journalist and being an active participant in one of the biggest stories in this country right now is simply not compatible – especially Chris regarding what kind of story the governor should provide to the media. – Considering Mr. Cuomo’s advice. So let’s focus instead on the actions of his employer, CNN, and how those actions led to this situation.
The path that led CNN down this path began with the decision to hire Chris Cuomo. There were undoubtedly countless journalists and television presenters with his qualifications who had no vested interest in covering prominent politicians. However, nepotism is completely rampant in mainstream media.

It’s unclear whether this has emboldened Chris Cuomo to continue pushing that path further, but it’s more than enough to call into question CNN’s commitment to ethical journalism. It calculated ratings derived from exclusive interviews with nationally known figures, even if it was done by his brother, who tends to throw softballs. It is incredibly hypocritical for CNN to admonish Chris Cuomo for his actions while clearly playing out a similar conflict of interest on air.
CNN will avoid the current situation at every step of the process, whether by hiring journalists who don’t have these contradictions, by upholding good journalistic standards when it comes to reporting on my brother, or by reprimanding Chris Cuomo more. I could have made a wiser choice. It’s strict now. Chris Cuomo is responsible for his own actions, but CNN has no one else to blame for this part of the controversy.
