SOUTH SIOUX CITY – South Sioux saw a 6.3 percent decrease in serious and violent crimes last year, according to data provided to the City Council by the Police Department.
A total of 532 Part 1 crimes were reported in 2023, including murder, forcible rape, robbery, aggravated and simple assault, robbery, theft, motor vehicle theft, and arson, compared to 568 the previous year.
Crime statistics are based on Part 1 crimes reported to the FBI under the National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS).
South Sioux City recorded 10 forcible rapes in 2023, up from eight in 2022. Robberies also increased from two to four during this period.
There were no homicides, arson, or accidental deaths reported in 2022 or 2023. The last homicide in South Sioux City occurred in 2017, the last arson was tallied in 2020, and the last death due to negligence was tallied in 2019.

Kidnappings and kidnappings decreased from seven in 2022 to three in 2023, and auto thefts decreased from 41 to 23 in one year.
NIBRS also allows the South Sioux Police Department to track all other reportable crimes, including vandalism, identity theft, stolen property crimes, and drug crimes.
After adding these other reportable crimes to the crimes in Part 1, the city reported a 6.7% decrease in total crimes. The total number of crimes reported in 2023 was 927, down from 994 in 2022.
The data is scheduled to be formally presented at Monday’s City Council meeting, which begins at 5 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chambers, 1615 First Ave.
