A regional journalist who previously spearheaded the publisher’s group-wide investigative team has announced his move to the BBC.
Clare Wilde was one of a number of high-profile figures to announce their departure from National World this summer, amid a raft of compulsory and voluntary redundancies, a list that also included fellow investigator Harriet Clugston.
She wrote at the time: “I have made the difficult decision to leave National World after five wonderful years… I am looking for new opportunities so if you are in need of a data journalist please get in touch.”
Now Claire (left) is ready to take on a new challenge at BBC Leeds after starting her new role as a journalist covering West Yorkshire on Monday.
Clare, formerly of the Bradford Telegraph and Argus, joined The Yorkshire Post as crime correspondent in 2018 and became group data and investigations editor a year later.
Having learned data journalism through a secondment to the BBC Shared Data Department in Birmingham, she helped run the National World Team, which provides regional data and content to all daily and weekly titles across the country.
Claire said: “Working in the data and research team at National World (and its predecessors, his JPIMedia and Johnston Press) was truly a dream role.
“I am extremely proud of the work we have produced, from building tracker stories to monitor a strained NHS to investigating rip-off PFI schemes.
“But it’s always good to give yourself a new challenge, so I’m delighted to be joining the BBC team in Yorkshire, a part of the world that I truly value and have called home for over 20 years. I’m really happy.
“I’m looking forward to meeting my new colleagues and diving into some important conversations.”
