A journalist who became a police spokesperson returned to a local newspaper and took charge of the daily news desk.
James Butler has joined the Newsquest-owned Southern Daily Echo as news editor, it has been announced.
James, pictured, worked for Johnston Press in Pennsylvania before joining Hampshire Police as a communications officer two years ago.
He announced his return to journalism in a post on LinkedIn.
James writes: “I’m thrilled to announce that I will be joining the Daily Echo as news editor next month.
“I have learned a lot over the past few years working in the fast-paced world of police communications and I am grateful to my managers and colleagues for their support.
“Given my background, it is no surprise that one of the most enjoyable aspects of this job is working with local media and getting to know the Echo reporters in particular.
“I’m really looking forward to joining the team and returning to an industry I’m passionate about.”
James began his career as a features writer for Portsmouth News in 2014.
In his new role, he will once again team up with former News colleague Ben Fishwick, who is now editor of the Southampton-based Echo newspaper.
From 2016 to 2020, James was a senior reporter at Johnston Press and its successor company JPIMedia, covering the Worthing Herald and Littlehampton Gazette.
She then moved to London at the end of 2020, working as a senior features writer for Real Life in Pennsylvania for five months before becoming a publicist the following year.
