Howard University’s Mooreland-Spingarn Research Center’s Black Press Archives Digitization Project has received a generous grant from Google to support archiving and preservation efforts.

Howard University’s Mooreland Spingarn Research Center and the National Newspaper Publishers Association have a long history of partnership, beginning in 1973 with the Black Press Archives Digitization Project, a joint project between the two. Google recently joined the Black Press Archives Digitization Project $760,000 Grant To support and continue the project’s work in digitizing and preserving the Black Press Archive’s collections. This includes his over 2,847 reels of microfilm representing over 2,000 newspaper titles and over 100,000 individual newspaper issues. These newspapers span the United States, Africa, and the African Diaspora, demonstrating the true global influence of black news organizations. Google’s grant follows Jonathan Logan’s $2 million grant from his family foundation, which made the project’s establishment possible.

The celebration will begin with a ceremonial drumming by Sadiki Lancaster, followed by remarks from the NNPA leadership. Chartered in 1973, the Black Press Archive is a joint venture between Howard University and the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) whose plan is to “permanently preserve and make available the collected documents of the Black press.
