A football reporter has quit his local daily newspaper for the first time in 18 years after the publisher revealed plans to cut its sports coverage.
Miles Starforth has bid farewell to the National World, where he covered Newcastle United for the Shields Gazette.
Miles, pictured, started his career at Newcastle’s Trinity Mirror in 2000 before moving to the Gazette five years later.
His resignation comes as part of wider sports desk cuts by National World, which revealed in June that one in three sports journalist roles at the South Shields title game were to be redundant. It was done after.
HTFP has asked the publisher for clarification on whether Miles’ role will be replaced.

“It has been a great honor to report on Newcastle United and I would like to thank everyone who has followed me on this journey and the many managers, players and officials I have dealt with over the past 900 games. .
“Thankfully, I leave this post on a high note as the 2022/23 season was one of the most memorable seasons I have seen from the press box in over 23 years as a football writer.
“A special thank you to my colleagues past and present who have been part of this rollercoaster stint.
“Finally, I was told pretty early on in my journalism career that you’re just good for the next story. So let’s see what the future holds.”
