students from northern iowa The University of Northern Iowa’s student newspaper and digital media program received 12 awards at the annual University of Iowa Media Association Awards Ceremony held Feb. 8 in Des Moines.

ICMA presented the award at its annual convention in Des Moines. Fourteen universities in Iowa are members of ICMA.

northern iowa News Editor Mallory Schmitz was also a finalist for ICMA’s Pat Pisarik Student Journalist of the Year award.
The University of Northern Iowa’s Independent Student Newspaper was founded in 1892. Digital media professors Christopher Martin and Anelia Dimitrova are co-advisers of the newspaper, which is supported by a portion of UNI’s student fees. The newspaper’s website is northerniowan.com. @UNI TV shows are produced under the direction of digital media professor Philip Hopper and broadcast engineer Michael Lubar. Eric Braley, professor of digital media, and Lubar oversees sports production for ESPN’s The Valley. ESPN streams his UNI Division I sports tournaments on ESPN3, which is staffed by UNI students.
