Technical.ly is pleased to welcome new editorial director Danya Henninger this week.
In this role, she oversees our multi-market newsroom, including everything we publish from the site, social, newsletters, and everything in between. She has a wealth of experience in journalism, but in the years I’ve known her, what always stands out to me is all the other things she’s done.
“I am a technologist and an entrepreneur myself,” Henninger told me. I met her about a decade and a half ago when she was running a commercial photography and video digital imaging business that she co-founded with her husband. Through years of coffee, drinks, and collaboration, we’ve shared a love of using journalism to challenge and document change in our communities.
we made fun of We gossiped on social media and at events. New tools and big ideas were always part of the mix. Now, she’s tasked with strengthening her Technical.ly journalism power and expanding its reach.
“As part of my job, I’m excited to explore the latest technologies and follow entrepreneurs’ business development,” she said. “Getting other people excited about these things, especially in the direction of solutions and utility, and with an inclusive lens of increasing diversity, equity, and belonging, is extremely fulfilling. It will be.”
Henninger is based in Philadelphia, where Technical.ly was founded, but stories of economic change happen everywhere. We aim to communicate to them as deeply and thoughtfully as possible.
Most recently, she was director and editor of the audio-rich local news source Billy Penn at WHYY, an NPR affiliate in Philadelphia. There, she grew the newsletter to nearly 45,000 subscribers and built a membership base of more than 3,100 contributors.
Prior to that, he reported for various news organizations, with a focus on food and culture. She was always interested in business and financial incentives, but nothing attracted her more than people following her passion. I first worked with Henninger when she was the editor of a local beer and spirits publication, which she helped expand into several U.S. cities.
That multi-market experience applies here at Technical.ly. There, Henninger oversees our work, highlighting what works and what doesn’t when it comes to invention and innovation in each city’s local context, and sharing those lessons across geographies. Her responsibilities include revitalizing the daily newsletter, expanding its reach, managing grant-funded journalism, and building new partnerships with community and media organizations across the Technical.ly network.
“I’ve always admired Chris as a smart guy who actually walks the talk. He doesn’t just explain innovation and entrepreneurship, he actually practices it,” Henninger said. . “I’m proud of the opportunity to lead Technical.ly journalism to be the best it can be for a community of people who make the city we love stronger and more vibrant.”
