Our researchers continue to provide authoritative analysis of how criminal groups in Latin America manufacture, traffic, and sell synthetic drugs. Fentanyl, a highly addictive synthetic opioid, will kill more than 70,000 people in the United States in 2023, and criminal organizations such as the Sinaloa Cartel and the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) have made Mexico a major producer and trafficker of the drug. It is used as a base.
This week, lead investigator Victoria Dittmar spoke to Deutsche Welle about what can be done to curb the illicit trade in fentanyl and the synthetic drug crisis. Our precursor investigation series explores how synthetic drugs are made, which criminal organizations operate in the illicit fentanyl market, and why government policy has so far largely failed to address the synthetic drug boom.
