The Kentucky Bar Association presented Sen. John Schichel (R-R.) with its “Tough on Crime Award” during the organization’s event in Lexington. This award recognized Mr. Schickel’s extensive track record of public safety support and career experience in law enforcement.
“We bestow this award in recognition of Senator Schickel’s lifelong contributions to the pursuit of justice and public safety,” said KCAA Secretary Louis D. Kelly. “We are grateful for all he has done to advance these interests throughout his legislative career.”

Kelly is the United States Attorney for Kentucky’s 54th Judicial Circuit, which includes Boone and Gallatin Counties. In this role, he serves as the chief felony prosecutor for his fourth largest judicial circuit in Kentucky, which handles approximately 1,100 cases annually.
Mr. Schickel served on the Judiciary Committee as a state senator and has a 45-year career in public service as a corrections administrator, law enforcement officer and teacher. President George W. Bush appointed him head of the U.S. Marshals Service for the Eastern District of Kentucky. Mr. Schickel is an adjunct professor in Northern Kentucky University’s Judicial Studies Program and was a member of the Curriculum Advisory Committee. He graduated from Northern Kentucky University with a master’s degree in public administration. In addition, he has received numerous other professional awards, including an award from his project Innocence for his research on DNA evidence after conviction.
The Kentucky Bar Association represents Kentucky’s 57 elected felony prosecutors, deputy prosecutors, and support staff. According to its website and bylaws, the association aims to ensure adequate legislation to protect the people it serves, the advancement and well-being of the commonwealth’s attorneys, and Kentucky’s criminal justice system in general.
