Indie games can often be overlooked due to the marketing overdrive of big AAA releases, but it’s these smaller games that often implement the best gameplay mechanics. With so many indie games now accessible to more players thanks to services like Xbox Game Pass or PlayStation Plus, it can be hard to keep track of new titles on the horizon. That’s where this list comes in, with the most anticipated indie games of 2024 that are bound to break new ground in the industry.
Hades 2
Hades 2 is easily one of 2024’s most anticipated games, being the first sequel from Supergiant Games. The roguelike sequel will feature a new child of Hades, Melinoë, a princess of the underworld as she wages war against Kronos. Like Hades, the sequel will release in early access on PC before a wider release on consoles.
Replaced
Replaced is a cool-looking 2.5D action platformer with a neo-noir aesthetic. The game has been shown off at Xbox’s conferences throughout the years and keeps looking better with each trailer. By featuring a unique take on pixel art, Replaced is looking like the perfect action game for indie lovers in 2024. Replaced will be released on PC and Xbox consoles along with being available to download on Xbox Game Pass.
Earthblade
From the makers of Celese comes Earthblade, which is sure to include some challenging platforming puzzles. Earthblade will see players control Névoa, an enigmatic child of Fate exploring a long-lost Earth. The game promises to feature challenging combat and seamless exploration, and given Celeste’s success, we can’t wait to see what new ground Earthblade will shatter.
Kind Words 2 (lofi city pop)
Kind Words is a unique game about being helpful to real people. Instead of slashing through monsters, the gameplay consists of writing letters to other players under the guise of anonymity. You can also write letters and send them to the digital void so other players can answer your queries. The first game was a warm, cosy experience and the sequel will add more social mechanics, taking a page from Animal Crossing’s book. Kind Words 2 will release some time in 2024 on Steam.
33 Immortals
What’s better than a two-player co-op game? How about 33 players? 33 Immortals will have you join up with almost three dozen players in a fight against God. Inspired by Dante Alighieri’s The Divine Comedy, 33 Immortals will be a chaotic action game where each player counts. If you’re a fan of Hades, then 33 Immortals will deliver a similar experience. 33 Immortals will be released on PC and Xbox consoles and will be available in Xbox Game Pass.
Hollow Knight: Silksong
Silksong has been on every Hollow Knight fan’s wishlist for almost five years now, but it may be a little too optimistic to expect a release date in 2024. The 2D souls-like platformer will let players explore dungeons in the kingdom of Pharloom. Featuring expanded combat mechanics, new enemies and tons of side-quests, Silksong is shaping up to be something special.
Pacific Drive
Pacific Drive may be perfect for car lovers who also like survival mechanics. This survival game is set in the Pacific Northwest where players will have to make periodic stops on their journey to repair their car. It features a cool twist on the formula and is releasing soon on February 22 for PC and PS5.
Little Kitty, Big City
If you had a good time with 2022’s Stray, then Little Kitty, Big City will scratch that itch to play more cat games. This wholesome game will have players take on the role of an adorable cat who can be customised to their heart’s content. You can explore the open-world playground, make new friends with other animals, complete quests or just take a nap in the sunshine.
