Harlingen, Texas – Texas State Technical University student Anissa Rodriguez grew up in a household where her father, an artist, embraced the arts and encouraged her to develop her creative potential.
“My father tried to get an education at an art school many years ago, but he didn’t finish because he started our family,” Rodriguez said. “After a few years, I found myself doing personal projects to improve my skills, such as doing photo shoots and creating flyers for friends and business owners. .”
Rodriguez is currently studying for an Associate of Applied Science degree in Digital Media Design at TSTC.
“We are getting good feedback from our instructors based on the assignments we have completed,” she said. “They give me comments like, ‘Well done what you did here,’ or ‘I like how you applied this to your work.’ That motivates me to work harder. ”
Rodriguez said she takes advanced knowledge outside of school.
“I want to be marketable, so I keep working on side jobs like I did before enrolling at TSTC,” she said. “For example, I worked on a short documentary for a friend of mine who is an executive. The end result turned out great. These personal projects helped me prepare for my career. It gives me confidence that there is.”
She added that TSTC has made her more confident.
“I am grateful to have earned my college degree here because I now realize there are options available in this career field,” she said. “And I want to honor that passion that her father instilled in me.”
Santiago Villarreal is one of Rodriguez’s instructors at TSTC.
“Anissa found a way to inject her creativity beyond the parameters of each assessment,” he said. “This kind of innovative thinking will serve her well in the industry because she can adapt.” She demonstrates critical thinking based on feedback and executes a course of action based on the client’s needs. I can. ”
According to onetonline.org, the median annual salary for graphic designers in Texas is $50,970. The website projects a 10% increase in the number of such jobs in the state from 2020 to 2030.
