PORTLAND, Ore. (KPTV) – Portland Police say they were leading a mission to arrest eight people along Northeast 82nd Street Wednesday night.
Police said the mission focused on several motels along the Strip with known problems.
“It’s nice to be out of the chaos,” said the woman who has lived off 82nd Street for 10 years.
Police said the motel in question has been the subject of repeated reports of assaults, stolen vehicles, drug-related problems and homicides.
FOX 12 spoke with one woman who said she’s been hearing these stories often at several motels along the Strip.
“Cars are coming in and going out. People are coming in and out,” she said. “Crime. There have been a number of shootings, primarily in Evergreen, which has been a high-traffic area for years.”
She said the Strip seemed quiet recently after the PPB stint. This time, eight people were arrested, 18 traffic stops were conducted, and $6,000 worth of stolen vehicles were recovered.
“That makes me happy,” she said.
Several other people FOX 12 spoke to shared that 82nd Street has been a growing problem over the years. Some say it’s a place where neighborhoods are dangerous and crime is high.
Two men who live nearby pointed out that the police response was insufficient. They said the mission was a step in the right direction, but they would like to see more support and more arrests in connection with crimes that are said to be happening in broad daylight.
The woman said she has called 82nd Street home for many years and the crime hasn’t stopped. She believes things seem to be heading in the right direction.
PPB said it plans to conduct similar missions across the city in the future to address so-called “livability” issues.
