One of the attorney general’s most important responsibilities is public safety. Our Criminal Division is responsible for investigating criminal activity, prosecuting crimes, and handling criminal charges and is the largest organization within our office. Among the criminal bureau’s outstanding professionals are her four members who work closely with victims and their families.
Each of these individuals plays a different role in our office. The four roles are the victim and
Witness Advocate, State Forensic Nursing Coordinator, Domestic Abuse Death Investigation Team Coordinator, Missing and Murdered Aboriginal Liaison Officer.
Our victim and witness advocate Macy Meyer works directly with victims and their families to guide them through the criminal process. She explains the complex legal process used to prepare victims and witnesses to testify at trial.She connects vulnerable Nebraskans.
It is an important resource and works in conjunction with the Child Advocacy Center. In particular, our advocates are advocates for children tragically involved as witnesses in criminal proceedings. Having someone who can focus on the victim in these cases is invaluable.
Annie Boatwright, state forensic nurse coordinator, connects sexual assault victims with law enforcement and resources.Our coordinator is a forensic nurse, so we often
Testify as an expert witness in a criminal trial.She played a major role in standardizing
Sexual Assault Test Kit for Victims of Sexual Abuse in Nebraska. Our office also
Provide priority access to Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANEs) throughout rural Nebraska, ensuring victims of sexual assault crimes are not charged for needed medical services.
The Attorney General’s Office also coordinates and appoints members of the Domestic Abuse Death Investigation Team. This team investigates homicide and suicide deaths resulting from domestic violence. Amy Killian, coordinator of the Domestic Violence Death Investigation Team, collects information from family and friends of both victims and perpetrators to identify trends in domestic violence deaths. This multidisciplinary team, which includes law enforcement, nurses, advocates, and mental health providers, reviews the information. The team’s goal is to recommend services and propose legislation to prevent future deaths.
Finally, the new position in the Detective Bureau, led by Grace Johnson, is
Missing and Murdered Indigenous Peoples. This position was created by Congress.

Wishart championed and provided funding for this role. In the event of a missing, murdered or trafficked Indigenous person, the liaison immediately contacts the family. Grace often connects Indigenous families of missing, murdered or trafficked loved ones with state law enforcement agencies and helps solve cases. This liaison will improve the relationship between the Attorney General’s Office and tribal leaders by providing guidance to the Department of Justice on how to develop community responses to missing and murdered people on reservations. is building.
In the 100 days since the liaison office was established, our office has been involved in eight missing person cases, of which six have been found.
