Entries are now being accepted for the inaugural LMH Paul MacLean Awards for Journalism.
The Paul McLean Journalism Award awards up to £600 a year to LMH undergraduates interested in a career in journalism to help them further their journalistic ambitions. For example, the award allows students to participate in internship opportunities, pay for related courses, and pay for accommodation while working at the student newspaper outside of the semester. This award is normally awarded to one student each year, but may be split between two students if both students are equally qualified.
The award was established in memory of LMH alumnus Paul McLean (French, 2011), who tragically passed away in Sri Lanka in September 2017 after graduating with first class. Ta. At the time of his death, Paul was pursuing a career in journalism as part of the Financial Times’ postgraduate trainee program, and during his time at LMH he took an active role in student journalism, particularly as deputy editor of Cherwell. I accomplished it. He also completed internships with the BBC and the Guardian. Paul was posthumously nominated for awards including New Journalist of the Year at the British Journalism Awards (2017) and Young Journalist of the Year at the National Press Awards (2017). As an indication of how highly regarded he was by his colleagues, the FT named their graduate scheme ‘ Paul McLean Graduate Trainee Programin his honor.
LMH’s Paul MacLean Award aims to support budding student journalists at universities who, like Paul, want to seize as many opportunities as possible to develop their talents and advance their careers. . Paul generously enjoyed sharing his expertise with others and was no doubt keen to mentor future generations of his LMH journalists over the years.
How to apply
If you would like to apply for the Paul MacLean Award for Journalism, please submit your application in writing. via this online form by Monday, March 18, 2024 5:00 p.m.. This award is open to LMH undergraduate students only.
You must provide a written statement (500 words or less) detailing how you will use the benefit and any possible costs. Applicants must also provide at least three examples of journalistic work (this step is provided on the form).
Entries will be judged by a panel of LMH alumni active in the field of journalism, and winners will be notified in the following ways: Monday, April 22, 2024.
Paul MacLean Award Terms and Conditions
When judging the awards, priority will be given to the following applicants:
- People who do not have access to other funding sources or who may not be eligible for other university grants
- His work focuses on investigative reporting
○Upon receiving the award and completing the course/internship, the award recipient will be asked to write a short report outlining what the award was used for to share with those who supported the award.
