Former CNN anchor John Abron announced Wednesday that he plans to oust Republican Congressman Nick Larota from his House seat representing New York’s 1st Congressional District.
Avron, a Democrat, announced his candidacy in a video posted to social media Wednesday morning. Avlon accused Larota of warning on the House floor that he was part of former President Donald Trump’s “MAGA stooges” and that “our democracy is at risk.”
“We need to build the broadest possible coalition to defeat Donald Trump, protect our democracy, and take back the House from his MAGA minions who no longer seem interested in solving problems. Yes. Together, we can flip this seat. Together, we can rebuild the middle class, invest in infrastructure, protect women’s reproductive freedom, and fight climate change. Democrats are in this fight. We cannot afford to lose,” Avron said in the announcement video.
It’s official: I’m running for Congress. #NY01 Because there is too much at stake for the country and community I love. Long Island families deserve someone who will fight for their values, not Trump’s values. It’s time for all of us to get off the sidelines. Mr. Avlon hopes to unseat Mr. Larota, who won the 1st District House seat in 2022 after former Republican Rep. Lee Zeldin declined to run for New York governor. Larota defeated former Suffolk County Councilwoman Bridget Fleming 56% to 45%.
The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) issued a statement after Avlon’s announcement, calling him a “self-righteous liberal hack.”
“Jon Avron’s entry into the NY-01 race will add more left-wing fuel to the already crowded dumpster fire of the Democratic primary. We look forward to litigating so voters will see just how far left he and other modern Democrats have become,” NRCC spokeswoman Savannah Viall said in a statement.
