Journalist Mansur Muhamed of HumAngle Media has been selected as a finalist in the prestigious Sigma 2024 award competition.
It was selected for a research report titled. “Finding Nigeria’s forgotten mass graves through satellite data”‘. The report was published on September 18, 2023, along with an extensive investigation by Kunle Adebajo, Head of Investigation at Hamangle, into the victims of extrajudicial killings and secret mass burials by the military.
Mr. Manser, a senior GIS/OSINT specialist at HumAngle, has expertise in leveraging information technology, geographic surveys, open source data, and visualization techniques, using satellite imagery and other open source intelligence to The burial location of a murder victim has been revealed. Although 591 entries were received from journalists representing 322 organizations in Africa, Asia and Europe, only 52 projects from 22 countries were shortlisted for the Sigma Prize competition.
HumAngle’s report and Looted Forest by Cameroonian publication Infocongo were the only two reports from Africa.
The international competition celebrates the best data journalism from around the world and also empowers, uplifts and educates the global community of data journalists.
Winners of the Sigma 2024 Awards will be announced in March and receive a $5,000 cash prize.
