J.Lo says her stylist begged her not to wear her green Versace dress

The year is 2000. Velor tracksuits and low-rise jeans are on trend, and Jennifer Lopez just made waves when she walked the Grammys red carpet wearing a green jungle-print flowing Versace dress.

The jungle-print dress, with its plunging neckline and thigh-high slit, was one for the history books, but it hardly had its moment.

In a new interview with Vogue, Lopez revealed that her stylist at the time, Andrea Lieberman, begged her not to wear the dress to the awards ceremony.

“It was a dress that someone else was already wearing,” Lopez said in an interview with Vogue. “The stylist said, ‘Don’t wear it. Someone else is wearing it.'”

However, the musician thought the dress looked great and decided to go ahead with it anyway.

“I was like, ‘You bought it for me, and it looks great, so I’m going to try it on.'” So I did. And it caused quite a stir,” Lopez said.

The singer also compared her Versace dress to Marilyn Monroe’s white halter neck dress in The Seven Year Itch.

“I think every generation needs that iconic kind of Marilyn dress, and this is the dress for this generation,” Lopez said. “Why did that happen? It just happened to happen the moment the wind blew and I went on stage.”

That night, Lopez walked the red carpet with Sean “Diddy” Combs and received her first Grammy nomination for Best Dance Recording.

In 2017, she told Entertainment Tonight’s Carly Steele that she could feel people buzzing when she stepped onto the red carpet.

“It was a weird feeling,” Lopez said. “I was like, ‘What’s going on?'” And my dress was on, and I didn’t know it. ”

In fact, the singer wasn’t the first to wear this dress.

This semi-sheer number was worn by model Amber Valletta at Versace’s spring/summer runway show during Milan Fashion Week in October 1999.

In December 1999, Donatella Versace herself wore this gown to the Rock Style Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

In January 2000, about a month before the Grammy Awards, Geri Halliwell of the Spice Girls wore this dress to the inaugural NRJ Music Awards in Cannes, France.

Lopez wasn’t the first to wear this dress, but she was the one who made it iconic. So much so that Google Image Search was created.

In January 2015, former Google CEO Eric Schmidt wrote in a Project Syndicate article that Lopez’s green dress moment inspired Google’s founders to create Google Image Search. Ta.

“As it turned out, people wanted more than just text. This was first evident at the 2000 Grammy Awards, when Jennifer Lopez wore a green dress that caught the world’s attention. Because I collected them,” Schmidt wrote. “At the time, this was the most popular search query we’d ever seen. But there was no surefire way to get exactly what the user wanted. JLo wore that dress.
