A Lawrence High School student has won the Kansas Student Journalist of the Year award.
The award was presented to fourth-year student Maya Smith by Eric Thomas, executive director of the Kansas Scholastic Press Association, on Wednesday in a surprise ceremony attended by LHS students and staff, as well as Smith’s family.
A second-year editor-in-chief of Red and Black Yearbook and a third-year student journalist, Smith has previously earned acclaim for her photography, writing, and design. She is the second LHS student journalist to earn statewide honors, according to a news release from the Lawrence School District. Kyler Dunn won this award in her 2022 year, and LHS graduate Tracy Carroll earned her second place in the 1991 state competition.
Smith is a student of educator and journalism advisor Barb Thoren.
A panel of experts in professional journalism, university journalism and academic journalism reviewed Smith’s portfolio and selected her for the award and a $1,250 scholarship, Thomas said. Reading some of the judges’ comments, he said: “From start to finish, this is an extraordinary portfolio of experience…truly dedicated journalists delivering outstanding work to schools and communities in tangible ways…some truly powerful images such as Comments from a well-rounded journalist…with an outstanding understanding of how design can express photo-storytelling.”
Judges will review the portfolios of all state winners and award additional scholarships this spring. The Spring National High School Journalism Conference, sponsored by the Association for Journalism Education and the National Scholastic Press Association, will be held April 4-6 in Kansas City, Missouri.
Smith thanked the crowd for allowing him to “interview and take thousands of photos,” the release states.
