Last night’s Media Freedom Awards recognized local journalists for their work exposing wrongdoing and highlighting the importance of press freedom.
Stephen Topping of the Manchester Evening News was named regional journalist of the year in 2020 for his coverage of the death of toddler Awab Ishak, who was exposed to foul-smelling mold in his family’s council housing flat in Rochdale. It was.
MEN was also highly commended in the ‘Research of the Year’ category for its survey of housing conditions in the borough.
The top award in this category went to the Carlisle News and Star for reporting on an investigation into police use of Tasers.
Belfast’s Sunday Life was named regional news media organization of the year and Dolly Carter of the East Anglian Daily Times won young journalist of the year.
The award was presented at a ceremony at London’s Banking Hall, hosted by the Society of Editors and attended by more than 250 journalists from across the UK.
Veteran campaigner Dame Esther Rantzen was presented with the Outstanding Contribution to Journalism Award for a career dedicated to “supporting, uplifting and giving a voice to others”.
Rantzen accepted the award and paid tribute to those in attendance, saying the work of journalists is a “unique and important role” that is more important than ever.

Furthermore, she added: “I think we have to be careful because as journalists, we have to be absolutely sure that we are accurately describing the situation that we are writing about, speaking about, and broadcasting.
“But with that warning in mind, we provide a vitally important means of informing humanity, whether it’s about global warming, pandemics, or the heart-wrenching battles taking place in the planet’s wars.” Our role is unique and important.”
Now in its second year, the award was presented by ITV News presenter and journalist Lucrezia Mirarini, with headline sponsorship from prestigious London-based art sales company Globe Gallery.
The event was also attended by Lucy Fraser MP, Minister for Culture, and John Whittingdale MP, Minister for Media.
Dawn Alford, executive director of the Society of Editors, said: “The winners of the Media Freedom Awards 2023 highlight outstanding scoops and investigations that dominated news stories and influenced real change over the past year.
“From exclusive agenda-setting to arguably life-saving campaigns, we are honored to recognize and celebrate the important work the news media industry does every day to hold itself accountable on behalf of the public.”
