Extra! Extra! read all about it!
Shreveport Times and Shreveport Journal: A Look Back! We discovered a treasure trove of old photos related to these two historic newspapers at LSUS’s Northwest Louisiana Archives. Over the years, photographers, editors, journalists and other employees from these two newspapers have all brought news to the region.
In old movies, an actor would walk up to a newsstand, joke with the guy in the newsstand, pick up the newspaper, drop a few coins on the counter, and then walk away. Believe it or not, that scene was repeated thousands of times in downtown Shreveport at the time. Hyman L. Cohen’s newsstand stood on the northeast corner of Texas and Marshall streets in downtown Shreveport from 1914 until its removal in 1946. This stand had access to editions of the Times and Journal as well as a huge selection of other magazines until it was removed in April 1946. That was a big draw for men and women who worked downtown and wanted to know what was going on. All over the city and around the world!
Also see the 1940s Shreveport Journal and Shreveport Times buildings at the corner of Travis and Marshall streets, as seen through the lens of Jack Barham’s camera. I wanted to add some color to make it more lively.
