Police said the suspect signed up for a Gmail account to access the Patrick Henry High School group chat. Experts say it’s relatively easy for anyone to join a Snapchat group and start talking to its members.
Mike Horning, an associate professor of multimedia journalism at Virginia Tech, said that despite efforts to limit Snapchat groups to limited members, it can be easy to circumvent their security.
“Most social media companies don’t police the private conversations you have with someone on social media, and they may have algorithms that alert you to certain types of things. But who knows? In terms of whether they choose to join, they’re not going to check it out, so it’s relatively easy for anyone to join a group and have a conversation with members of that group, Horning said. .”
She added that parents should always be vigilant when it comes to their children’s social media and may need to ask their children if they have access to a mobile phone. He also suggests talking to them about joining groups on social media sites.
