Big story: The Florida Legislature has approved a measure to ban minors under 16 from accessing online platforms, citing the need to protect children from addictive social media.
The bill was a priority in the House, but several changes were made in the Senate. These do not prevent the House from approving HB 1 upon its return, paving the way for the bill to be sent to Gov. Ron DeSantis for his signature into possible law.
DeSantis expressed skepticism about the bill, which has drawn opposition from student groups, Mothers of Liberty and others. He said Thursday that he may not sign the bill because it does not give parents the power to make decisions for their children, WMFE reported.
Even if Mr. DeSantis does not veto the bill, it could face major hurdles in court. Other states that have banned young people’s access to social media have also faced constitutional challenges, and judges have so far ruled against the states. Read more from the Times Tallahassee team.
