Two journalists who quit their jobs to launch a new regional title have won their fifth business award since its founding.
West Dorset Magazine was also named overall winner at the West Dorset Gold Awards, following similar wins at the Dorchester and Bridport Local Business Awards.
Founders Miranda Robertson and Karen Bate beat out a total of 491 entries to win the award.
Miranda and Karen have stepped down from their posts as editor and news editor, respectively, of The New Blackmore Vale to launch the title in February 2022.
The magazine is assisted by advertising sales director Laura McManus and cartoonist Lyndon Wall, who was recently runner-up for Political Cartoonist of the Year.
Miranda’s father, Bob Holman, 78, is also selling advertising for the title.
Miranda told HTFP: “Karen and I were surprised to win considering how competitive it was.
“It is so reassuring to know that we are embraced by the people of West Dorset and now the people of Weymouth and Portland.
“Based on the feedback we have received at the shows we have attended, what people love is our magazine’s very Dorset voice, gentle humor and attention to detail.
“People love our cartoons, they are usually based on classic sitcoms but include one or two local stories.
“It’s our fifth time winning a business award, and it feels strange because we’ve been through a very steep learning curve, having picked up a couple of old hacks with no business experience. But , is doing well as its revenue continues to increase due to the magazine’s popularity.
“It’s really hard to sell advertising space right now and a lot of regional magazines are going out of print. So we’re doubly proud to be one of those rare publications that’s gaining traction. I think so.”
