In my personal experience throughout my life, every state in the United States has religious freedom, but some states have more freedom than others. In my opinion, Illinois is one of the freest states, allowing complete freedom of religion. Illinois has almost every religion imaginable. These include Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism, Zoroastrianism, Jainism, and Taoism. In fact, the oldest Baha’i temple in the entire world is located right here in Illinois. Almost every faith known to man can be found in Illinois. This is important. Because there should be no religious test for any faith, and in order for all religions to be free to exist and practice in this state without interference, there should be complete separation of religion from all state governments. This is because it is necessary.
There is no question that Christianity is the majority religion in Illinois. Of course, it is divided into at least her four branches. They are Roman Catholic, Protestant, Eastern (Greek) Orthodox, and Coptic. All four of his branches of Christianity are located in Illinois. In this state all four branches are free to practice what they believe. This is not surprising. Sadly, there are those who are trying to change the face of this country in order to make their view of Christianity the dominant religion. One example is the Illinois Family Institute. They promoted their religion (Christianity) in public schools, promoted creationism in public schools, and separated religion and state even though the U.S. Supreme Court essentially struck down homosexuality as a crime in 1987. I’m thinking of ending it.
Of course, since Illinois is primarily run by Democrats, it is highly unlikely that religious extremism would ever become law in the Illinois General Assembly or be signed by the governor. What worries me is that extremists will take the law into their own hands. If they don’t get their way in Congress, they may take up arms and harm innocent people. The same goes for Jews in Illinois (and across the country). Fortunately, the governor of Illinois is doing everything he can to protect Jews here. As I passed by the synagogue on my way to my appointment, I saw police cars patrolling the synagogue 24 hours a day to make sure it was safe. No matter whose faith it is, it must be defended or no one else will be. We must not allow the current climate of bigotry, bigotry, and fanaticism to deprive us of what generations of Americans and Illinoisans continue to enjoy. That is complete religious freedom.
