A new degree in digital media will be awarded to Faulkner in fall 2024. Leading this degree is none other than ESPN’s Tommy Lee Washington. He revolutionized sports entertainment networks with his iconic motion media and dynamic graphics.

Tommy Lee Washington is an Emmy Award-winning graphic designer and 3D animator who has worked in the graphic design and motion media fields for over 35 years. Celebrating his 30th year, Tommy recently retired from ESPN as a senior animator on the SEC Network. Before joining ESPN, Tommy worked as a music director of video and infomercial art. He used to run his own design company, specializing in his animation of scoreboards with clients such as the Philadelphia Phillies, Philadelphia Eagles, and Philadelphia Flyers.
The new degree plan, developed by Washington, includes cutting-edge 3D animation and motion graphics, as well as games, video editing and print design. It will also be a blend of marketing, computer science, web development, and user experience design.
The field of media art and digital media can be found in movies, television, video games, podcasts, websites, advertising, social media, and more.
“Digital media has not had the same impact on our culture as motion graphics,” Washington said. “When you go to your local grocery store, you see thousands of products, each with product packaging and labels designed by someone. They wear books, read books and magazines illustrated and composed by graphic artists, and are taught through sophisticated 3D animations and edited videos.Every business and company in the world has brand identity packaging and corporate materials; It has to be laid out and designed by someone.”

In 1994, Tommy was hired by ESPN as Graphic Designer 1 and began creating graphics for various studio shows including SportsCenter, NFL Gameday, and RPM Tonight. He won an Emmy Award for his work on SportsCenter.
In 1996, he was selected as the lead designer to design ESPNEWS. At that time, he took the initiative to teach himself his 3D animation software and became the first in-house employee to create his 3D animations that aired on the ESPN network. It was the ESPNEWS station ID.
He continued to be an innovator by creating the first animated over-the-shoulder graphics, the first full-screen moving background, and the first virtual reality set for Outside The Lines. He also contributed to the design of his first 3D animated clock and score bug for remote production.
He became a senior animator in ESPN’s Charlotte office in 2007 and was recently nominated for an Emmy Award for “Outstanding Live Graphic Design” for ESPN’s SEC Network.
Washington was the first formally trained Black designer to work for ESPN and the only designer from ESPN’s founding until 2007. To give back to aspiring designers, he collaborated with his Disney On The Yard to create his ESPN Creative Studio Speaker series. Mr. Washington is a mentor to many, most recently serving as an adjunct professor at Alabama State University, Oklahoma State University, Southern New Hampshire University, and Liberty University, where he taught Online Graphic Design and Motion He Media .
