A former local daily newspaper editor who later moved on to train in journalism has joined a communications agency, teaming up with another former editor in the process.
Richard Bowyer edited Stoke-on-Trent’s daily newspaper, The Sentinel, before becoming Senior Lecturer in Journalism at the University of Derby in 2014.
After leaving university last month, he has now joined Loughborough-based corporate communications agency 1284, partnering with another former daily news manager, George Oliver.
Before founding 1284, George was editor of the Leicester Mercury from 2016 to 2020.
Richard joins 1284 in a part-time role as Content Editor, supporting print page design, editing and B2B content for 1284’s small business and local government clients.
Also on the team is Amy Orton. He spent his 15 years as a journalist on various news in the East Midlands and a period as communications manager for the NHS.
Richard said: “1284 is clearly a growing business and when George offered me the opportunity to work with him and Amy I thought it was a good opportunity.
“The company’s focus on innovation and growth in the East Midlands region, along with its purpose and philosophy of providing a high quality service, is a perfect fit for my way of working.”
Mr George added: “Richard brings additional experience and business knowledge to the benefit of our 1,284 customers.
“His arrival continues our policy of hiring experienced professionals and brings a deep understanding of the media and communications industries and Midland’s deep network.”
Richard started his career at the Coalville Times and the Ashby Times and has also held positions as deputy editor at the Peterborough Telegraph, Wolverhampton Express & Star, Derby Telegraph and Lincolnshire Echo. Ta.
In his role at the University of Derby, he was instrumental in establishing the country’s only Football Journalism degree course and the university’s Magazine Journalism course.
